Four major Ontario school boards are suing TikTok, Snapchat and Meta Inc. alleging the apps have disrupted the school system by negatively rewiring the way children think, behave and learn. The public district school boards of Toronto, Peel, Ottawa-Carleton and Toronto's Catholic counterpart are seeking about $4.5 billion in damages. Duncan Embury, a partner and head of litigation at Neinstein, the firm representing the boards, told CBC News the named companies are "mainly responsible" for the social media products that kids use, and they share "common" designs or algorithms that lead to "problematic use." To his knowledge, this is the first case of its kind in Canada. Hundreds of school boards in the U.S., along with some states, have launched similar lawsuits against social media companies. CBC Toronto reached out to all of the social media companies named for comment. In an email to CBC News, a spokesperson for Snapchat said the app was "intentionally designed to be different from traditional social media." "Snapchat opens directly to a camera — rather than a feed of content — and has no traditional public likes or comments. While we will always have more work to do, we feel good about the role Snapchat plays in helping close friends feel connected, happy and prepared as they face the many challenges of adolescence." The allegations have yet to be proven in court, and there is no set date for when they will be heard. #Students #SocialMedia #Education

Former President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he intends to protect American women "whether the women like it or not." The Republican nominee told rally attendees in Green Bay, Wisconsin, that his advisers told him not to say to say that he wants to protect women. "They said, 'We think it's very inappropriate for you to say,'" Trump said just as members of the crowd cheered his remarks. "I pay these guys a lot of money, can you believe it? I said, 'Well, I'm going to do it whether the women like it or not.' I'm going to protect them. I’m going to protect them. I’m going to protect them from migrants coming in. I’m going to protect them from foreign countries that want to hit us with missiles and lots of other things." The former president went on later to say that "we're going to protect our women at the border. ... And also, we're going to protect our men and our children. We're going to protect everybody." The crowd inside the arena cheered after Trump asked, "Is there any woman in this stadium that wants to be protected by the president?" A jury in New York convicted Trump earlier this year on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to hush money payments made during his 2016 presidential campaign to cover up a sexual encounter with an adult film actress. More than two dozen women have accused Trump of sexual misconduct. #trump #donaldtrump #women #pbs #pbsnews #election2024 #vote #presidentialelection
