@danielles_useless_farm: Henrietta came with this house. she was the lone survivor of her flock with the previous home owner. when he moved, he left her behind and the neighbor "adopted" her, gave her to me, then took her back. however, when I introduced the babies outside, their presence gave Henrietta a new purpose in life and she loved hanging out with the babies and teaching them to forage, take dust baths, and sunbathe. she adored those babies. however, she was absolutely miserable being locked up. she protested and fussed and was a sad chicken when i tried. so i stopped locking her up and let her free-range and she was a very happy chicken again. at some point, I'm guessing a fox got her because she suddenly disappeared right before we noticed a fox in the woods. there are no roosters so I don't anticipate that she went broody. however, if she shows back up, I'll happily welcome her home.
