They built 285 of those designs, and 16 became working viruses that reproduced and killed the bacteria. Then they created three versions of E. coli that could survive the original virus. But the AI-designed ones broke through every single one, and some of them swapped genes with each other. Pause on that last part, because it's frickin insane. Because this same kind of AI could eventually help create completely new treatments for diseases For stuff that medicine still has no answer for, like drug-resistant infections or cancers we still can’t cure. But that’s also what makes this terrifying. Because someone could eventually use the same technology in the opposite direction to design viruses that infect and harm humans. Nothing in this experiment could infect people, the viruses only attacked harmless lab E. coli. But we’ve crossed a point of no return where AI can now design complete viruses, humans can build them, and they actually work.
