This gene codes for a protein that is part of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter family, which is involved in transporting various molecules across cellular membranes. Earwax Type: The ABCC11 gene has two primary variants, or alleles, that influence the type of earwax a person has. One variant leads to the production of dry, flaky earwax, while the other results in wet, sticky earwax. The dry earwax allele is more prevalent among East Asian populations, while the wet earwax allele is more common in African and European populations. Body Odor: The ABCC11 gene also affects the production of underarm odor. The same variant that causes dry earwax is associated with reduced or absent underarm odor. This is because the gene affects the secretion of certain molecules in apocrine sweat glands, which are located in the underarm and are responsible for producing body odor when broken down by bacteria. Genetic Inheritance: The traits influenced by the ABCC11 gene follow a pattern of autosomal recessive inheritance. This means that a person must inherit two copies of the dry earwax/stink-free allele—one from each parent—to exhibit both dry earwax and reduced underarm odor.
