i often see people say that levi surviving was fan service, but i don’t think that’s true. it would have been more fan service to let him die: give him a glorious closure, making him reunite with his fallen comerades, humanity’s strongest finally getting peace after saving mankind. instead, he survived when all of the people he ever loved didn’t. levi ackerman, a soldier used to following orders and never stop fighting, is now forced to live a “normal life”, all after losing two fingers, an eye and not being able to walk anymore. his purpose now is to live in the peaceful world he so long fought for, with his old subordinates now busy with world peace and taking care of orphans in what remains of the rest of the world outside paradis. this, is the saddest ending for levi, not because he could never be happy or similar, he can, and he can find a new purpose. but it is tragic, considering his whole character arc and development. had levi died, he would have deserved it in the best of ways. he would have deserved to pass away with honor and pride after killing zeke and keep the promise made to erwin, he would have deserved to see hange, miche and all of his friends again, even farlan and isabel or his mother and kenny.
