I will say, this wasn't an unintentional effect of a change, that was their goal, and it absolutely doesn't ruin the paladin at all. I'd also argue smite isn't the bread and butter of a paly, or at

AND Bards can grab Divine Smite when they get access to spells from other class lists...

It would require you to utilize war caster. Which now make it a huge feat to take for paladins

Feels like all the classes are becoming more similar, nerfing distinguishing features. Wonder if this ties in with their attempts to roll out AI dms

It also makes it non exclusive to the paladin robbing them of one of the cores of their class identity.

you also wouldn't be able to double/triple smite cuz you can only cast the one leveled spell per turn.

wait. aren't smites (not divine smite) already spells? don't they already take a bonus action? and aren't they a minute of concentration? are they getting rid of the length of time with concentration?

I honestly don't think it needed to be nerfed. they were great for burst damage, but it costs a spell slot. paladins don't get a lot of them and once they run out that was it, your damage drops.

I meannn… rouges only get 1 sneak attack per-turn? And like, I get paladin is the DAMAGE DEALER, but it does benefit balancing reasons?

Just reading some of the comments, people complain that Paladins are overpowered when Full-casters that can do comparable damage, take out hordes of enemies, and bend reality (at higher levels) exist

I know so many warlock mains that are gonna utilize the fact that it’s a spell as a way to power up hexblades

Would casting smite also disrupt concentration on other spells?

divine magic is not regular magic though... divine smite should be class specific imo

For the point of being countered, reminder that in the updates a countered spell isn't expended, so you only delay the smite. It really sucks on a crit. That said, one smite of turn is definitely...

here's the thing, this would be fine....IF they kept it a theme (like in devo Pal) where pals get bns effects when smiting, then it wouldnt have been as bad tbh

I personally think smite should remain as it is in 5e, but just be once per turn. I don’t like that it now uses the bonus action because I think that makes Paladin combat a lot more boring and same-y

As someone currently playing a paladin I think it’s a needed balance. Plus I can now activate my Sacred Weapon as part of an attack action so I’ll get consistent radiant dmg without wasting an action

honestly with all of the buffs paladins got I'm tired of hearing people complain about smites. the paladin deals four times more damage than anybody else in my party. The class needed a Nerf
