Tuna fish sandwich has onion, pickles celery cut small in it. The egg salad same it has onion, mustard , pickles. It’s not just mayo. There’s also chicken salad/ ham salad sandwiches

Egg salad and chicken salad can be eaten without the bread. When eaten with bread it’s called an egg salad sandwich or chicken salad sandwich.

Salad just means something is mixed. It’s not exclusively an American thing. Ex, Germans have Fleischsalat (meat salad) & Tunisia has Mechouia Salad (like a salsa). 🤗

"Salad" is just a mixture of things. We have egg sandwiches which is fried egg in bread or toast. Egg mashed with mayo and seasoning is egg salad.

tuna and mayo is just a tunafish sandwich if it's tuna, relish, hardboiled egg would be tuna salad sandwich.
