This line 💙✨ . . . . .. . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Built by Cardinal Wolsey and later seized by Henry VIII, Hampton Court became the palace most closely associated with the Tudors. Henry lived here with several of his queens, including Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, and Catherine Howard. One corridor is famously known as Catherine Howard’s hallway - legend says she ran down it after her arrest, screaming for mercy, hoping to reach Henry. Though historians can’t confirm the story, it captures the fear of a teenage queen caught in courtly politics. Elsewhere, the palace still holds traces of Anne Boleyn - an ‘H’ and an ‘A’ entwined, carved into the wood of the great hall. Though Henry ordered her symbols destroyed after her execution, this fragment remains. Hampton Court was also the site of history in the making. Jane Seymour endured her difficult labour with the future Edward VI as courtiers waited in the Great Watching Chamber, while the Great Hall echoed with feasts, music, and politics at the heart of Henry’s reign. But beyond kings and queens, the palace walls hold the unknown stories of ordinary lives - worn steps leading down to the wine cellars, the servants’ stairs, and countless unseen hands that built, maintained, and filled the rooms with life. Even the portraits, like that of young Edward VI, remind us that behind the grandeur were people - a boy king, queens both exalted and doomed, and workers whose names are lost to time. #britishhistory #tudors #anneboleyn
