The CR system isn't broken, people just don't read the encounter building rules 😅 The DMG clearly explains how to build encounters for parties of different sizes and with different challenges. When you use the rules in the book it works pretty much perfectly (even if you're not running an XP based game you should still use the guidelines in the book). That's all sites like kobold fight club are doing - running that math behind the screen.

my guy... encounter building is very clearly explained in the DMG. you just need to calculate the XP.

To find your parties CR add all of their levels and divide by 4 and as a general rule of thumb cr 1 higher than the parties is a challenge that may be deadly
