I think it's not actual value. it's a happy meal sans toy. what we used to get for 3 dollars they want 5 dollars for and they've done nothing to increase volume/quality/ service

I think it’s more marketing and it’s not costing them what they claim. In the app it’s a deal so only order 1 and can’t use another deal or reward.

It's been over a year since I've gone to McDonald's, and that $5 meal is not gonna bring me back, everything in that meal used to be on the $1 menu, so I don't see it as a value.

it's not unlike what retail calls a loss-keader. An item they sell at a loss to attract a customer, but then they buy various other things while there, making up for the small loss on the one item.
