as an Australian it boggles me to have somewhere like target ask for tips. restaurants... sure. but we don't HAVE to because the employees are paid a decent wage. but target? what?

T.I.P.S - to insure prompt service. I read this was historically paid at the beginning to insure you were served well not at the end to reward good service

Should you tip based on the price before tax or after tax?

My problem with places that have an automatic service charge is do they actually give the tip to the worker or am I just paying for the owners third home?

or, maybe it has to do with standardized restaurant computer software that doesn't allow them to remove the tip line.

I worked at a grocery store and we weren’t allowed to accept tips even if someone tried.

I don’t tip for fast food restaurants and most stores because there’s no option to go above and beyond but they still want that tip makes no sense to me

I worked on the grounds at a cemetery and would get tipped all the time. We were not allowed to keep it (morality and all) but some people would get upset if you didn’t take it. Not going to argue

I've worked at a grocery store where we weren't even allowed to accept tips if offered. that's a no tip establishment

Had to take my car in for a repair last week and imagine my surprise when the $280 fix that took less than an hour to complete for a part I found on Google for $50 prompted me for a tip. 1/2

A more accurate measure is whether they are paying staff the regular wage or the tipped minimum wage.

Just pay equal & fair wages tipping would be redundant… from another Australian

I'm anti-tipping. (I DO tip in our current model, because I'm not punishing minimum wage workers.) But I especially hate tipping places that set their own prices.

The liquor store I frequent asks if you want to tip when paying with a credit card.

Here in Australia tipping isn't anything more than a jar on the counter with "Tips" written on it. We only tip if we've had great service but more likely we just don't want to pocket our loose change.

Giving tips is good. It's generosity, so good. However, I think the places that use tips so they don't have to pay their employees enough suck
