This week, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a warning to all countries after finding a link between child cough syrup and the death of over 300 children from Asia and India. The WHO stated that most of these kids were under the age of five. The two toxic chemicals which were found in the cough syrups are -- diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG). Diethylene Glycol is a chemical is commonly used in multiple products including antifreeze, brake fluid, cosmetics, lubricants, wallpaper strippers, and as solvent for aromatics in petroleum refining. It is known to have a sweet taste which is why it was probably added to the cough syrup. The WHO said, “These agents can be fatal even taken in small amounts, and should never be found in medicines,” These poor children passed away of acute kidney failure. The kidneys are the organs that filter and remove waste but they were so overburdened by the chemicals that they shut down and failed to work. In doing this research I found more terrifying information that this same chemical is found in the US in vape cartridges. Its no wonder why young teens and adults that are trying to take a safer approach to smoking nicotine are commonly being rushed to the hospitals for all sorts of medical issues including collapsed lungs. According to the American Lung association, Diethylene glycol –is a toxic chemical that is directly linked to lung disease. Smoking of any kind is bad but it is starting to look like people who have switched to vaping for a “healthier alternative” have actually been duped into consuming more harmful toxic chemicals. For parents looking for a natural remedy to cough syrup, try pineapple. Pineapple contains a natural occurring enzyme called bromelain that companies such as NyQuil have synthesized bc it curbs a cough. Our prayers go out to the families who have lost their children in this horrible chain of events.
