I might be the last to “winterize” my chicken coop 😳 but it’s just now getting down in the 30s at night. These are the few things I do (and don’t do!) to make sure my chickies are happy and healthy through the winter: First, I don’t use a heat source. Birds acclimate to cold really well. They just don’t need it. It can also be problematic— what if your electricity goes out in a snow storm and cuts out the heat source? Now your chickens, who weren’t allowed to aclimate to the cold, could go into shock. It’s just not worth it. DO: make sure the coop is dry. Moisture can cause frostbite. Keep food and water in the run. Remove wet hay and bedding daily or, better yet, make sure it doesn’t get wet in the first place. DO: make sure there’s proper ventilation and seal up any major drafty spaces. I used pool noodles in the eves and made sure they were in tight. They don’t completely cover the vent so the air flow is not totally blocked.
