The fact that the captain gives them false hope. They thought they would be rescued so they didn't take what was happening too seriously and they didn't know what was happening because they were just students. The students just followed what the captain and elders told them because they thought they would be saved if they followed it. Those announcements killed them. They don't know that the captain just betrayed them and left them to die inside the ship.
