It was an entire emotional universe for a child to grow up inside of, where the line between the two people he loved most blurred until it became almost impossible to tell them apart. Years later, as creative director of Gucci, Michele decided to tell that story — not through words, but through the language he knows best: fashion. On September 23, 2022, at Milan Fashion Week, "Gucci Twinsburg" was born. 68 pairs of identical twins walked in matching looks across two parallel runways, separated by a wall covered in portraits of twins, staged simultaneously for two separate audiences — neither aware the other version existed. Only in the final moment, when the wall was lifted, did the audience realize: the entire time, they had been watching the exact same show, just from opposite sides of the mirror. 136 models ultimately joined hands, merging into a single runway — a moment that, in Michele's mind, may have felt like the two halves of his childhood memory finally reuniting. "They lived in the same body... That was my world, perfectly doubled and duplicated," Michele wrote in his show notes. But he also emphasized: his two mothers, though identical in appearance, were in truth extensions that completed one another rather than dissolving into each other. Each still carried something entirely her own. That is the core message of the show: no matter how perfectly duplicated the surface may appear, there will always be something quiet, singular, belonging to each individual — something no duplication can ever erase. One of the most beautiful and emotionally resonant shows of Alessandro Michele's eight years at Gucci — not because of its scale, but because of how deeply personal it was. 🤍
