Bc d&d didn’t understand the lore of the dragons. They should be the size of Araxx or even smaller. They just wanted some cool monster dragons for the scenery of season 6-8. :/

In a way it kind of makes sense. Daenerys didn't chain her dragons up (except for Viserion and Rhaegal) and so their growth wasn't stunted.
