On January 7, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), the fourth-highest-ranking House Republican, made waves when she all but refused to commit to certifying the 2024 election results, irrespective of the results. NBC News' 'Meet the Press' host Kristen Welker asked Stefanik, 'Would you vote to certify and will you vote to certify the results of the 2024 election, no matter what they show?' Stefanik would not answer with a yes or no. Instead Stefanik parroted the MAGA talking point about election security, saying, 'We will see if this is a legal and valid election.' As the chair of the House Republican Conference, Stefanik is effectively in charge of the conference's daily operations and has a large role in setting the party's positions and votes on issues. Stefanik is one of two members of House leadership to recently endorse, in some form, Donald Trump's lies about election security and widespread election fraud. The same morning as Stefanik's NBC interview, House Speaker Mike Johnson dodged questions about the validity of Joe Biden's 2020 victory during an appearance on CBS' 'Face the Nation.' Stefanik has also decried the treatment of those prosecuted in relation to their roles in the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, referring to them as 'hostages.'
