Here are some key lessons from running my first marathon; -Training is harder than the race The race is just the victory lap—the true grind happens in training. Waking up for freezing morning runs, sacrificing social plans for long miles, and pushing through fatigue week after week is where the real battle is fought. If you skip the hard work, race day will expose you. But if you put in the miles, the marathon itself becomes a celebration of all you’ve already overcome. -The Race Begins at Mile 20 The first 20 miles are just the warm-up—the real test comes after. Many runners hit "the wall" because they start too fast or underestimate the mental and physical endurance required for those final miles. Pace yourself, trust your training, and save energy for the gruelling last stretch. -Your Legs Are Not Your Friends (At Least Not Right Away) Post-marathon recovery is no joke. Even if you feel fine the next day, your body has taken a beating. Heavy legs, stiff joints, and fatigue can linger for weeks. Respect the recovery rule: one day of rest per mile raced (26 days!). Rushing back can lead to injury—listen to your body. -Chafing: The Silent Race Killer Nothing ruins a marathon like unexpected friction in places you didn’t even know could chafe. Test every piece of clothing, sock, and shoe in training. Lube up liberally with anti-chafing balms (Vaseline, Bodyglide) on race day—trust us, your future self will thank you. -Fuel Like Your Life Depends On It (Because Your Race Does Practice your nutrition strategy (gels, chews, hydration) in long training runs. Start carb-loading 2-3 days before, and don’t skip pre-race breakfast. On-course, take water at every station—even if you’re not thirsty yet. -The Finish Line is an Emotional War Zone Crossing the line unleashes a flood of emotions—pride, exhaustion, even unexpected tears. After months of sacrifice, the high is real… but so is the post-race blues. Savor the achievement, but be ready for an anticlimax. You’ve earned this moment—own it, even if no one else fully understands. -Nobody Cares (And That’s Okay) You trained for months, sacrificed your social life and weekends, and pushed through pain—but most people won’t grasp what it took. Friends might glance at your medal but won’t truly "get it." That’s fine. This journey was for *you*. Celebrate your victory without expecting others to match your enthusiasm. What would you add to the list? 🚀 #Running #runner #marathon #marathontraining #firstmarathon #runnersproblems #runnershigh #runningtips #run #tips
