NCV sensing is only for AC wiring. It’s the same thing as the light up volt pens I assume exist on state side. In UK and hate them as an electrician for false positives.

So on the solenoid the you did the wire correctly, the plug end looks correct as well, I’m guessing when the last person worked on it the possibly switched the pins on the board connector.

As soon as I saw -12v which means the multimeter probes were backwards (red on negative) I figured someone messed something up with the wiring :(

Coils themselves are not polarity dependent but the protection diode has to be reversed of the polarity connected to it so when the collapsing magnetic field generates a voltage spike.
