If this is a common mistake then they should honestly implement some sort of fuse around there to prevent the whole board from frying.

the old cable you took off didn't look like it had previous repairs. it looked like there were inline resistors behind that heat shrink.

NCV sensing is only for AC wiring. It’s the same thing as the light up volt pens I assume exist on state side. In UK and hate them as an electrician for false positives.

So on the solenoid the you did the wire correctly, the plug end looks correct as well, I’m guessing when the last person worked on it the possibly switched the pins on the board connector.

Any way to wire an inline fuse so that can’t happen again?

As soon as I saw -12v which means the multimeter probes were backwards (red on negative) I figured someone messed something up with the wiring :(

Add a bench top power supply to your work area! You can test things like solenoids really easily before plugging it back in.

Coils themselves are not polarity dependent but the protection diode has to be reversed of the polarity connected to it so when the collapsing magnetic field generates a voltage spike.

if only the people who fix the games were also the ones who design them. would probably be way easier to get to things.
