@jeeves_ny: There are two main reason you cannot wash a (silk/wool) tie at home: 1) The fabric is cut on the bias, or diagonal, to improve the functionality of the tie. Unfortunately this makes it difficult to clean 2) Most ties have interfacing (wool or cotton canvas) within it which can shift or move during cleaning This interfacing is very similar to what’s on the inside mens suit jackets and why those also cannot be cleaned at home.  Also, a little pro tip for you, if you are having a hard time finding a stain you KNEW was there, try looking down on the tie as if you were wearing it.
