@fastlanejo: 100 MOMENTS OF MOVIE MAGIC DAY 36: The ending of "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (1969). After decades of the traditional Western having ruled the boxoffice, the sea change of the late 1960s in Hollywood also brought about this revisionist Western. Paul Newman and Robert Redford were the definite anti-hero than what we were used to, leading to a much different film filled with comedy as well as action. By the end of the film, they are cornered and as they are about to make a run for it, they think they are only being chased by a few gunmen that they feel confident they can take on. But while they talk in their hideaway, what they don't realize is that a large army of troops has joined the posse, and there's truly no way for them to escape now. When they finally make their break for it, we see them run briefly but then director George Roy Hill makes the perfect choice to freeze the image before we see them cut down. We hear the gunfire and can only imagine the amount of times they are being hit. As the sound of gunfire drains away, the image turns sepia, and the two become legend, preserved in a way from their final death.
