I disagree that if they said no then this is their best offer. You can still play hardball, they won't retract their offer just cos you go back to them and say you think x amount more is more matching

I think it’s better to just hit them with your ask instead of asking. If the offer is 180k then you come back with “can we do 190?” Basically assume it’s negotiable.

In Australia sometimes we have to fill in an electronic form and one of the qs is salary expectations. Not optional. I always pick the higher end - could this hurt my options?

I have never found this to be good advice. Always ask for your offer. Review it. Then ask for what you want. If you ask, they always say it’s not negotiable.

It’s entirely dependable on your experience and the skills you provide, make sure you’re fully equipped for a negotiation because if you’re worth more than you offer you will be fired
