@anna..papalia: When you receive a job offer NEVER accept it on the spot! When I tell people this, I always get these 3 questions. #1 What if they lie? -Why would they lie? They just interviewed 50 people and they decidd that you are the person for the job. Why wouldn’t they hear you out and see if they can give you what you want? Also, if what you want is an extra $5k on salary or 10 more days PTO they will do it if they can because they want to fill the position and move on in the same way you want to get a job and stop your job search. #2 What if they say it’s not negotiable? If they say it’s not negotiable then you know you got their best offer and you need to then decide if you can live with that offer. If they won’t or can’t negotiate the ball is now in your court. Take 24 hours to think about it. #3 If try to negotiate or if I ask for more money won’t they just take my offer away? They will only take the offer away if you lie, misrepresent yourself or negotiate unprofessionally. Trust me, if they have made you an offer they want to try to make it work and you would have to do something stupid to get them to take your offer away. I might even ask if I have to accept at the moment, or if I can have some time to think it over especially if it’s their best offer.

I disagree that if they said no then this is their best offer. You can still play hardball, they won't retract their offer just cos you go back to them and say you think x amount more is more matching

I think it’s better to just hit them with your ask instead of asking. If the offer is 180k then you come back with “can we do 190?” Basically assume it’s negotiable.

If negotiable, come back with your value…. Present your experience and skills. You don’t want to just ask for more… you need your back it up to show your value.

I have never found this to be good advice. Always ask for your offer. Review it. Then ask for what you want. If you ask, they always say it’s not negotiable.
