We were brought up to be told it was offensive to call travellers gypsy so I think it maybe a generational thing cause my mum would have slapped me silly for saying gypsy we had it drilled into us

but are you Romani or Irish? because Romani nomads are the origin of the word gypsy and it was and still is used as a derogatory term. Irish nomads are travellers and have fairly recently (in the history of civilization) been incorrectly labelled as gypsies. This term was adopted by Irish travellers so they don't tend to find it offensive if they're called it, but for Romani like myself, this term is deeply rooted in racism. It's not hard to research why the term is offensive to certain people, even if you personally don't find it offensive.
