The amount of stress and pain that a bit can cause is extreme. Bits are so accepted that the fact that there is a cold, hard piece of steel/iron in the horse’s mouth is rarely questioned and it’s unfortunately not uncommon to see training that involves yanking or applying immense pressure to the bit. 😓 On the other hand, bits have the potential to do so much good. When used correctly, they can directly encourage a relaxed jaw which in turn influences the horse’s entire body and helps the horse find relaxation, balance and true collection. The bit can also provide the rider with important information as to what is happening in the horse’s body and become a tool for refined communication. 💖 We have far surpassed the age when horses were required for battle and transport. In today’s day & age, riding horses is not a *necessity*, it’s a privilege that comes with great responsibility over our equine friend’s welfare. So I encourage you to listen to your horse. If he: 🌟 Throws his head up in the air and/or clamps his jaw shut when you bridle him 🌟 Constantly champs/fidgets with the bit, shakes his head, sticks his tongue out to the side etc 🌟 Opens his mouth or throws his head when pressure is applied …then there is something wrong! If a horse shows these behaviours, it should be taken seriously. Too often, these behaviours are accepted as normal and ignored. 🙁 What to do: 1. Ensure your bit is fitted properly and that it does not cause any pinching or rubbing. 💥 2. Rule out mouth/teeth pain. An oral/dental examination should be performed under sedation by a qualified equine veterinarian. 🩺 3. Reflect on the true reason/s behind your use of the bit. 💭 If the bit suddenly fell out of your horse’s mouth while riding, what do you think would happen? If you are using the bit to control your horse, your horse is not ready for a bit just yet. Wait! I am NOT advising you to go out and ride your spicy OTTB without a bit! 😂 It all starts from the ground but its a topic much too extensive to go into in this same post so I will make a separate post about this 💞 #equestriantiktok #equinehealth #fyp #horsesoftiktok #equestrianlifestyle #libertyhorsemanship #horsetraining
