Studies suggest that adults should consume approximately 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day (WHO/FAO/UNU, 2007). However, higher protein intake may be warranted for physically active individuals, pregnant women, or those breastfeeding (Campbell et al., 2015). Daily inclusion of protein in our diets is paramount due to its pivotal role in preserving muscle mass, promoting satiety, aiding in weight management, and supporting overall health (Houston et al., 2008). Inadequate protein intake has been linked to muscle wasting, compromised immune function, and impaired wound healing (Paddon-Jones et al., 2008). For individuals adhering to a vegan diet, meeting protein requirements can be challenging since they abstain from animal products. However, research suggests numerous plant-based protein sources can fulfill their dietary needs (Mariotti et al., 2019). Legumes like beans, lentils, and chickpeas, as well as soy products such as tofu and tempeh, are excellent sources of plant-based protein (Mariotti et al., 2019). Additionally, grains like quinoa and nuts/seeds are valuable contributors to a balanced vegan protein intake (Mariotti et al., 2019). While plant-based proteins may lack heme iron, which is more readily absorbed by the body, pairing them with vitamin C-rich foods can enhance iron absorption (Hallberg et al., 1989). For example, consuming beans with citrus fruits or adding bell peppers to a tofu stir-fry can optimize iron absorption from plant-based sources (Hallberg et al., 1989). In conclusion, protein is an indispensable nutrient crucial for various physiological functions. Incorporating adequate protein into our diets is essential for overall health and well-being.
