Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Thursday criticized President Biden for asserting executive privilege over the audio recordings of his interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur as part of the investigation into his handling of classified documents. “President Biden is apparently afraid for the citizens of this country and everyone to hear those tapes,” the speaker said. “They obviously confirm what the special counsel has found and would likely cause, I suppose, in his estimation, such alarm in the American people that the president is using all of his power to suppress their release.” Special Counsel Hur found the president improperly handled classified material from his time as vice president but declined to bring charges, citing as one of his reasons his assessment that a jury would likely find the president to be “a well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory.” The decision to assert privilege came hours before the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees were set to meet on a resolution to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for refusing to turn over the recordings. “The absence of a legitimate need for the audio recordings lays bare your likely goal — to chop them up, distort them and use them for partisan political purposes,” White House counsel Edward Siskel wrote in a letter to the committees’ chairs, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and James Comer (R-KY). “Demanding such sensitive and constitutionally protected law enforcement materials from the executive branch because you want to manipulate them for potential political gain is inappropriate,” Mr. Siskel added. Speaker Johnson argued that the American people have a right to hear the recordings — not just read the transcript that has already been released — and accused the president of “using his authority defend himself politically.” #speakerofthehouse #mikejohnson #joebiden #merrickgarland #cspan
