This isn’t always an easy conversation in practice… but it’s an important one! Owners often explain that their dog/cat is overweight because they ask for food all the time. Or they beg for treats all the time! Or “they turned up their nose so I bought a new brand”. It’s important to remember that: 1. Your pet’s weight/body condition is one of the most important aspects of their health. Overweight pets are at a much higher risk of several diseases including orthopedic injury, osteoarthritis and diabetes. 2. Every pet food (fresh, canned or kibble) has a different nutritional profile which means 1 cup of one food could have 30% more calories than the same amount of another food. It’s important to work with your veterinarian to determine the amount of kcalories your pet should eat daily. This is based on several factors! 3. Restricting your pets caloric intake is not mean! It is what’s best for them and their health. There are ways to increase their satiety(feeling full) without increasing calories. It is your responsibility as their caretaker to make sure they are eating an appropriate amount of calories from nutritious foods. It is equally important to ensure they are getting adequate exercise. 4. Keeping your pet in a healthy body condition is JUST as important as other factors like maintaining good dental health, monitoring bloodwork and preventing infectious disease. 5. Once your dog is a potty trained adult they do not need a food reward for going to the bathroom 😬 Love you mean it! #dogs #cats #veterinary #veterinarian #vetmed #obesity #dogobesity #catobesity #vetmed #vetlife #vettips #veterinarytips #vettok #veterinariansoftiktok #veterinarian
