On June 16, this adult female Osprey was found grounded in the middle of a hayfield in Pine Plains, New York. She was rescued and brought to a local veterinary hospital. From there, she was brought to Sharon Audubon before being transferred to us for continued rehabilitation. Radiographs revealed that she had been illegally shot. She was likely experiencing significant pain which resulted in her being grounded. Multiple pellets were embedded in her body. New York DEC was notified of the crime for investigation. For the first couple of weeks, her wounds were cleaned and treated twice daily. She also received antibiotics and pain medication. She initially required assisted feeding, but quickly she began eating fish entirely on her own. Ospreys are notoriously reluctant to eat in captivity, so we were incredibly relieved when she began eating fish on her own and that she finally felt safe enough to eat while in our care. Once her wounds had healed, she graduated to one of our flight enclosures. There, she rebuilt her strength and regained the endurance she needed for release. It is heartbreaking that someone chose to illegally shoot this bird. Osprey are already having an incredibly difficult season on the East Coast, driven by the lack of Menhaden fish available to feed themselves and their young. Habitat loss, vehicle + boat collisions, fishing line entanglements, and heavy metal poisoning are all common reasons for an Osprey to need rehabilitation. These birds already face so much simply trying to survive. It is devastating that deliberate human cruelty is yet another threat Osprey face. Selecting the right release site was an important part of her recovery. With nesting season now over and migration approaching, our priority was finding a peaceful place where she could readjust to life in the wild and prepare for the journey ahead. Ospreys from Connecticut migrate as far as South America during the winter months. We chose a suitable habitat, far from highways, with dependable access to fish. This allowed her to regain her bearings without being returned to the location where she had been shot. After everything she endured, this site gave her the peaceful return to the wild that she deserved. When we opened the carrier, she paused and quietly took in her surroundings. Before taking flight, she turned and looked back at each of us. For one brief moment, it almost felt as though she were saying “thank you for all the free fish and safe place to stay!” Watching her fly free brought tears to our eyes; happy ones. After the deliberate human cruelty she endured, we are so thankful we were able to return her home. A very special thank you to her rescuers, the veterinary team that triaged her, and Sharon Audubon for taking her in and providing the immediate stabilization she needed before transferring her to us. Their care played an essential role in her recovery. Lastly, THANK YOU to everyone who follows and supports our work. Engaging with and sharing our posts helps more people learn about our mission and ways to help wildlife. Donations go directly towards purchasing food and medical care for our patients, and help make moments like this possible ❤️ Onward and upward, beautiful girl! Welcome home. #christinescritters #lovemyjob #dayinthelife #osprey #wildliferehab
