I don’t think they were trying to cash a fake check. Scammers will email you offer you a job then send you a fake check in the mail and request you “cash it for equipment”.

To be fair, I know someone who got an online advertising job and received a fake check. They deposited it and after spending a few hundred the funds were rescinded.
