Tbf re: the acolyte — fans knew what was coming the second they announced weinstein’s secretary was producing it and released the cast list, and were very vocal that we didn’t want that.

Fans also don’t have the competency to craft a story.

Although, to be fair, a lot of fan backlash comes from just bad writing. Writers aren't infallible. Look at the Witcher. Henry Cavill was literally holding that thing together and he was a fan boy.

apparently the writers and directors of the Acolyte don't understand the story either

See when *I* say why don't tv show writers consult with fans, what I am meaning is why are they constantly getting lore wrong when there are so many fan wikis they could have consulted so easily??

The better approach is to only hire people who actually like the source material and want to be faithful to it. The Acolyte and The Witcher both failed in that regard.

it's incredibly simple. don't destroy the mythology that was created and people love. especially if it's been building for 30+ years.

I am confused as how I as a fan can catch continuity errors in a sitcom and the writers don’t.

Personally, I think the question refers more to lore and history of the franchise's universe. In the example of Boba Fett, what turned many fans off was how they made him good trying to make things --

No, I think the point is that “fans” usually have a near maniacal understanding of the source material, chronology, and characters. When we say “consult”, we KNOW the writers write the movies/tv shows

I totally understand not consulting about what fans *want* but they should have focus groups to rule out what fans absolutely DON'T want. (GOT S.8)

I think franchises like Star Wars are exceptions to that in some sence. Things where there has been a fandom long before new writers get brought on who don’t care about the history

I think shows like the Acolyte do respond to fans, just not the ones that have any idea on what would make a good tv show. If they ignored the “people” they would make less

I thought the og comment meant in the sense of fact checking and lore checking as it seems many producers sometimes mix up or drop some lore and history ect.

Yea but she is not saying let fans write it. If you read it closely, she says, why don't they consult. Fans know more of what they don't want. That alone would have saved several shows.

Even better is if they hire writers who are actually fans of the series they are writing for. 🤔

I've seen enough god-awful ideas from fans on threads of, "What do you hope happens in ?" that I know fans often have very terrible ideas

There is a difference between consulting fans and having fans provide the idea. There are really knowledgeable fans out there that can add legitimacy to the project. Writers often believe they are experts on all things AND can put that into a cohesive story. Find the fans who know the IP the best and ask them to review your work. Listen to the feedback. I’m happy to give examples that do work.

It's also why focus groups are usually a crapshoot instead of being representative.
