Doctors couldn't wake him. Then one asked for Bugs Bunny. Mel Blanc was the voice behind Bugs, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Tweety, Sylvester the Cat, Foghorn Leghorn, Yosemite Sam, and Barney Rubble, nearly 400 characters in all. In January 1961, a head-on collision at Dead Man's Curve on Sunset Boulevard left him with a triple skull fracture, two broken legs, and a shattered pelvis. He spent two weeks in a coma while doctors called his name with no response. When a neurologist finally asked, "Bugs Bunny, how are you today?" Blanc answered in Bugs's voice: "Eh, just fine, Doc. How are you?" He recovered in a full-body cast and kept recording "The Flintstones" flat on his back, and his lawsuit against Los Angeles got Dead Man's Curve rebuilt. He worked nearly three more decades before dying of emphysema and heart disease at Cedars-Sinai on July 10, 1989. He was 81. His tombstone at Hollywood Forever Cemetery reads "That's all folks." #edutokcampaign #famousobits #melblanc #BugsBunny #diedonthisday
