for me, nostalgia is more about the reminder of how I felt about life back then. I was more positive and hopeful, and I wish I could steal back some of that optimism and confidence

The best Lent I ever had was when I gave up nostalgia. Those were the days.

well I'm sorry you don't have that Jason. I feel nostalgia all the time and honestly it's one of the only good feelings I get to experience anymore. I grew up in the early 2000s playing Halo

I feel like a society that didn't ruin someone's ability to put food on the table for a joke or perceived insensitivity was less cruel than ours today.

Nostalgia is a plague on millenials specifically because the internet changed the world so drastically over the course of our lives.

keep in mind one can reminisce without feeling nostalgic, and experience joy in simply telling a story, and then incorrectly use the term nostalgia/nostalgic

It’s not really that we miss the past, it’s that we miss our younger selves. Nostalgia is painful to a point but also beautiful. I would hate to not feel nostalgia.

I totally agree. The nostalgic moments that I appreciate are the ones that remind me of happy childhood memories but I have zero degree of delusion about the past being somehow “better”.

Nostalgia feels like trying to relive the novelty of learning and discovering the world the first time. You grow up, and things get… predictable, but we remember how things used to feel special.

I love this perspective because it’s so real. People view the past with rose-colored glasses. It’s good to see the good and bad.

One thing to consider is most everything we interacted with in the 70s and 80s was analog, mechanical, manual. Yes, computers came out in the 80s but still most everything was unplugged and mechanical

It's mostly people who decided to stop growing as a person after high school who are nostalgic about the past. In my experience, of course.

I don’t think nostalgia for the 80s means we’re automatically ignoring the negative aspects of that time period. I think part of the Gen X is that we are the last generation who remembers life

Nostalgia for me is like sitting in a feeling, a memory, and knowing that part of my brain hasn’t been tickled for a long time. It’s not all good or bad, but it is a reminder of my previous and continued existence.

Everything was dirty but it was also empty. Cities, beaches, and attractions generally weren’t so crowded. You didn’t have to be filthy rich to afford water front property. Or to travel Europe.

I do agree 110%. Even worse, nostalgia walks us into rejecting the future and not enjoying it the same as we enjoy the past. We need to stop thinking and sinking on our past and start giving everyone else good child memories.
