Same thing happened to us with Ian. I live in fort Myers and it was originally supposed to go to Tampa- we had 24 hours to evacuate and everyone was like you knew for weeks- NO we had 24 hours!

My parents are the type to evacuate for a Cat 1 because of large trees around their house. This happened so fast they didn’t have time to plan to leave.

Thank you sooo much for posting this. I sent my young adult kid to Houston in my car 7/3 from CA. Her FIL passed away, we were shocked when everything changed. I feared we were negligent.

hurricane predicting is SO nuanced. Long track predictions are HARD and not always accurate. Mike has shown the SAME nhc tracks. But he also talked about POSSIBILITIES.

There was a TikTok circulating on 7/3 that had the ICON model showing Beryl hitting Houston but all the other stations did not. My sister prepped just in case and we’re glad she did.

It’s a very big difference to expect rain or even heavy rain versus a direct hit from a tropical storm. And you’re right bc employers wait until it’s for sure before closing.

I have a degree in meteorology. Tropical prediction is insanely hard and Beryl is not your typical storm. If you don’t live in hurricane country you just don’t get it.
