Tightness or knots between your shoulder blades? Shoulder stretches and mobility work are a great-but let's start with the fundamentals. If we're unable to properly expand through the upper back (thoracic spine), it limits the ability of the shoulder blades to glide smoothly along the ribcage. This can limit everything from mobility to strength.  This is a common restriction, and addressing it can improve mobility and comfort for most people. Here's a simple way to get started: Use a small ball (even smaller than the one shown here— a rolled-up pillow works well at home) or position your chest on a bench. This allows you to round through the upper back and create space between the shoulder blades. Take 15-20 deep breaths, directing your inhale between the scapulae to encourage thoracic expansion. Reinforce this movement pattern by fully protracting (reaching forward with) your shoulders during all row variations.  Save this to try later—and let me know how it feels!
