Depends on who invited who, but I won’t go on a date unless I can cover myself at the very least. So if I invite them, I’ll cover. If they invite me I’ll offer to split.

i feel like the first date should be split or the responsibility of the person who asked the other on the date. like if I invite you to dinner I'll pay but if we both plan the date then we'll split it

I always make sure to settle this upfront. Because if I know I'm paying or were splitting it's going to drastically alter the amount of food I order whereas I'm much more frugal on someone else's dime

My rules that work for me: Offer to split. If they agree, fabulous If they offer to pay, let them and thank them. If they do the "Oh, I was hoping.. 🫤" thing, tell them you're paying for yourself.
