Surveillance footage reportedly showed David Xu tampering with the area where she kept her water bottle, including an incident in which he appeared to pour a substance into it. Yuan reported the matter to police. Investigators subsequently found dangerous levels of cadmium, a toxic heavy metal, in samples of her water. Tests also reportedly detected elevated cadmium levels in blood samples from Yuan and her parents. In March 2019, Xu was arrested. He later entered a no-contest plea to a felony poisoning charge in 2023. However, the outcome shocked many people. In March 2024, he received two years of probation rather than a lengthy prison sentence. He was also ordered to stay away from Yuan and her parents. The case returned to public attention in October 2026 after Yuan released the surveillance footage publicly while Xu sought to have his felony conviction dismissed following completion of probation. A final ruling on that request has not been independently confirmed here. For Yuan, the ordeal was about more than discovering what might have caused her illness.
