I’m still trying to process what this past week actually was. 😂 I came to Las Vegas representing Kansas for Mister USA knowing I was stepping completely outside of my comfort zone. I didn’t really know what to expect, who I was going to meet, how I was going to fit in, or even exactly what version of myself would show up once everything started. I just knew I wanted to show up as me. Looking through these pictures now, I’m realizing how much happened in such a ridiculously short amount of time. I walked across a stage in a swimsuit in front of a crowd, posed for professional photos, danced, flexed, wore things I never imagined myself wearing 😂, ran around Vegas with a Mister USA sash around my neck, met some of the people who have been following and supporting me online, actually got to hang out with some of them in real life, made new friends, laughed my ass off, and somehow finished 5th place at Mister USA and was awarded the title of Mister Culture Universal. That is still absolutely wild to type. But as proud as I am of how I placed, some of my favorite parts of this entire experience happened outside of the actual competition. For years I’ve talked into a phone and seen usernames, comments and profile pictures on a screen. In Vegas, some of those people suddenly became actual human beings standing in front of me. We got to talk, take pictures, laugh and hang out together. That meant a hell of a lot to me. I didn’t go into this wanting to be the loudest person in the room or the most polished guy. I wanted to be the same person in real life that people have gotten to know online. I wanted to listen to people, laugh with them, make them feel comfortable around me and hopefully leave people feeling seen and respected. There are pictures here where I’m onstage trying to look like I know exactly what the hell I’m doing 😂, pictures where I’m proud as hell of the physique I brought, and others where I’m wandering around Vegas wearing a sash, drinking a beer next to a giant Hello Kitty or taking selfies with people who knew me before I ever stepped foot on that stage. I love that all of those versions are here because all of them are me. I’m proud of the physique I brought. I’m proud that I got on that stage. I’m proud that I finished 5th. I’m proud to have been given the Mister Culture Universal title. But I’m probably proudest that I went through the entire experience without feeling like I needed to become somebody else to belong there. This whole thing started as something that intimidated the absolute shit out of me. 😂 Somewhere along the way it turned into one of those experiences I know I’m going to remember for the rest of my life. Sometimes you really do just have to say yes to the thing that scares you and find out what happens. I went to Vegas wondering whether I belonged in a room like this. I came home knowing I did. Thank you to everyone who supported me, voted for me, encouraged me, followed along from home, came up and introduced yourself to me in Vegas, or believed I could do this before I completely believed it myself. I represented Kansas at Mister USA. I finished 5th place. I left as Mister Culture Universal. And somehow the mustache survived the entire damn week. 😂❤️🌻
