Livestock guardian dogs. By far, the most challenging animal I employ on my homestead. I believe in using dogs to communicate boundaries with predators, so we can peacefully coexist with nature. No traps, no guns, no poisons nor bait. Just communication on behalf of the dogs to surrounding black bear, coyote, fox, fisher cats, bobcats, and more. I need them here to keep my animals safe, yet, the dogs require SO MUCH in return. Proper fencing is pivotal… and, at least in my experience, requires constant examination to make sure they’re not finding a way under, over, or through the fence lines. Even an electrified wire running 4” above the soil line with a bison-grade current isn’t enough to keep Orsa contained when she decides she going to escape by digging out. The battle is constant. I share these frustrations because I know so many folks with LGDs who feel the struggles… and they’re real. I mean these dogs are bred over centuries to be independently guarding stock on their own without human intervention. I understand their independence. And I appreciate it very much because without it they couldn’t guard as effectively. But, honestly, it outright sucks sometimes. Will I ever homestead without LGDs? No. I rely on them heavily. However, in my next years, I’m leaning towards a Spanish Mastiff, as I hear they prefer to stay close to their stock and not wander. If you have one, let me know if that’s true! And if you’re feeling this, you’re not alone!
