#News #covid19 Monday’s headlines in 60 seconds.
After Syrian rebels led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham captured Damascus, the Guardian’s William Christou gained access to Sednaya prison, known locally as “the human slaughterhouse”, alongside thousands of relatives searching for their loved ones. Upwards of 100,000 people have disappeared in the Assad regime’s prisons, infamous for their use of torture, during nearly 14 years of civil war, including at Sednaya prison in Damascus. The prisons were broken open early on Sunday, after Syrian rebels forced Bashar al-Assad, who had ruled Syria for around 24 years, to flee the country. Many of the prisoners who emerged were greeted by weeping family members who had no idea they were still alive. Some struggled to comprehend that Assad was gone; a few held even longer had never even been told that he had succeeded his father, Hafez, who died in 2000. Christou reports that rebel fighters tried to stop people from entering Sendaya prison, firing rounds in the air. But the crowd surged forward undeterred, searching for clues that could tell them where their relatives and friends might be, amid rumours of a hidden underground wing. Read more about what Christou saw when he entered the prison by heading to the link in bio.
