People had to be employed to listen out for the bell ringing in the graveyard, this was where the term graveyard shift comes from.

Etymologist here. "Rule of thumb" simply comes from the usage of a thumb as a unit of measurement. The old English "ynche" was defined as the breadth of a person’s thumb at the base of the nail.

Rule of thumb is also a miller's phrase. When the miller wanted to see if the flour was the right texture he would use his thumb and finger to check. Rule of thumb.
