I think you're right with pugging the fresh clay with the mill, the clay bags were always a little too dry on the outside when we got a new one in school and it helps it all be the same texture

i wonder if you could just wachs dip the clay rods to keep em perfect. Beeswachs should come off perfectly clean to remelt.. and the clay should stay perfect. Crazy ideas for 100

Is there an alternative to plastic sheets you could be using to not let the clay dry out? Only asking because of how long pottery has been around throughout history genuinely curious.

Definitely still recommend wedging it at least for a minute or 2. We had one of these in the studio I frequent, and we were advised to still always wedge the clay a little bit, because it’s not 100%

In my college we had a pug mill that fid both. We would recycle clay in it and it would also have the pressure to take the air bubbles out.
