Malaysia, what a place! We booked our own flights directly on Emirates from Newcastle to Kuala Lumpur, and then from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi via Malaysian Airlines. Ticket prices were £3600 in total. The flights via Emirates were great; excellent food and movie choices kept us entertained throughout the flight. The hotel cost us around £1000 in total for both hotels. Our hotel in Kuala Lumpur was great, located in Bukit Bintang. We stayed at the Park Royal Serviced Apartments. In Langkawi, we stayed at the Wings by Croske. In hindsight, I would book a hotel closer to Pantai Cenang beach in Langkawi. We always felt safe in Malaysia no matter what time of the night. The exchange rate was just under 6 ringgit to a pound. In some places, we were having a meal for the four of us, including drinks, for around £20. Though in Langkawi Kitchen we paid just over £125 but posh. It's relatively excellent value for money. We did most of our travelling around by taxi using an app called Grab. Each 10-minute journey would cost us around £3-4, including a tip. There's so much choice in food. Halal is pretty much available everywhere, but still ask as some places do sell pork and don't serve Halal, although we didn't find anywhere that didn't. People are very friendly. We crammed a lot in. I would probably recommend if you're visiting to go for at least 7 days as it's a long journey there. Instead of returning to Kuala Lumpur, I would recommend visiting Thailand or any other nearby Southeast Asian country as local flights are cost-effective. In hindsight, we would have loved to visit Bangkok after Langkawi. There are mosquitoes there; my daughter was bitten a lot, so take some repellent. There's no haggling culture, but in some shops, we did. Definitely do the mangrove boat tour; we paid around 400 ringgit (£70) for a private boat tour for 3-4 hours. Jet skiing allows you to do island hopping, which I'd recommend. Definitely visit Wan Thai in Kuah Town—amazing food. Book the Twin Towers, as it's always busy and full. Go to the small money exchange shops in Malaysia, as the airport is pricey. Shop around for the best price. You'll need your passport every time.
