A graduate of the 9th intake of the Defense Services Academy,Thein Sein rose through power consistently then joined the SPDC government in 1998 as secretary-2,eventually becoming secretary-1 in 2004 after the pruge of the Chief Intelligence Officer Khin Nyunt. He then became chairman of the National Convention in 2003,an assembly that created the 2008 constitution,then became an interim prime minister in the 2005's and officially became prime minister in 2007 following Soe Win's death. After Than Shwe stepped down from power,many expected Shwe Mann to became the president but the then leader's growing paranoia over him due to his independency and the fear of him turning back towards his mentor made Thein Sein,who was seen as more loyal and obedient the President over Shwe Mann in 2011. Once in office,he launched a series of political reforms,such as easing media censorship,making mobile phones and vehicles more affordable for all,releasing thousands of political prisoners and mostly reopening diplomatic powerhouses such as the USA,Germany,France and others,ending the 50 years of Burma's isolation from the west.
