😅Worried about your chickens surviving this cold snap? I get it! When we first started raising chickens 10 years ago, I was soooo worried. Through many years of trial and error, we finally have it down to a science💪🏼. Our winters are LONG here in Minnesota and we’ve already hit -30F, so I’m your gal when it comes to cold weather chicken tips! Here’s what to do: 1) Insulate the coop - we use 1.5” foam board covered with 1/8” panel board 2) Limit drafts - I (mostly) cover the windows with polycarbonate sheets 3) Allow for some ventilation so that moisture can escape (AKA prevent frostbite) - I use dryer exhaust vents 4) Add heated seedling mats to nesting boxes - frozen eggs have to be thrown away😩 5) Use heated dog bowls for water and keep it OUTSIDE, not inside the coop 🙅🏻‍♀️ 6) Add extra bedding - we use organic straw 7) Use 2x4s with the flat side up for roosting bars - this eliminates frostbitten toes 8) Add a safe, radiant heat source to the coop for when it hits -20F (no heat lamps!) 9) Utilize a large, covered run so the ladies can enjoy some snow-free outdoor time 10) Add greenhouse plastic around the run (secured with furring strips) to make it even better for them ☺️ I know the list is long, but winter can get brutal and my tips WORK🙌🏼. Even when it’s -30F, my chickens prefer to be in the run rather than inside the coop! …and that further helps prevent frostbite since there’s less poop/moisture in the coop✨ If you’re a visual learner, you’re in luck! 🙌🏼 I have a full YouTube video where I take you along as I complete each of these steps. This video also contains links to all of the products listed above. See you over there ✨ Did I miss any steps? Please share them in the comments! 🫶🏼
