Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday called the decision by the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) chief prosecutor to seek arrest warrants for Israeli leaders over the Gaza war “extremely wrongheaded.” Karim Khan, the ICC prosecutor, announced Monday he would seek the arrests of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant as well as three of Hamas’s top leaders, including Yahya Sinwar, saying he had “reasonable grounds” to believe they bear criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Secretary Blinken called it a “shameful equivalence” to link the leaders of a democratically elected government with those of the militant organization responsible for the Oct. 7 attack on Israel and said he would work with Congress to formulate a response. “That decision, as you said, on so many levels, is totally wrongheaded,” he told Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair Ben Cardin (D-MD). “And we’ll be happy to work with Congress, with this committee, on an appropriate response.” Neither the U.S. nor Israel are members of the ICC and argue that the international court has no jurisdiction over the war in Gaza. The top Republican on the panel, Sen. Jim Risch (R-ID), said he agreed with Secretary Blinken’s position, illustrating the bipartisan backlash in Washington to Mr. Khan’s move. “Sometimes we don’t agree on stuff, but I got to tell you that on the ICC, you got it exactly right,” he told Secretary Blinken. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Monday said the House would examine legislative options, including sanctions, to respond. The Trump administration accused the ICC of infringing on U.S. sovereignty in 2020 after it authorized an investigation into alleged war crimes committed in Afghanistan. The U.S. targeted the court’s staff with asset freezes and travel bans. #secretaryofstate #antonyblinken #blinken #icc #internationalcriminalcourt #gazawar #cspan
