@nytimes: Doug Mills, a veteran photographer for The New York Times, was only feet away from Donald Trump when the shooting started at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday. Mills kept his finger on the shutter button, photographing as the scene unfolded. It was only afterward, while reviewing his photos, that he realized he had captured the apparent path of a bullet used in the assassination attempt against the former president. He explains what he saw. Tap the link in our bio to read more. Video by Doug Mills, Nikolay Nikolov, Rebecca Suner and Alexandra Ostasiewicz. #Trump #TrumpRallyShooting

If the length of the bullet streak is 30cm and the shutter speed is 1/8000s. The bullet is traveling 2400m/s. What kind of rifle has that power?

As a photographer I only use this setting on my camera if my goal is to capture an object that is moving or is about to move very quickly.

Hope you get a nomination for a Pulitzer for this work, amazing captures taken under duress that fulfilled a promise to inform the public. Amazing.

I thought it was a screenshot from a video. Even more impressive that it was actually photographed

Also a photographer here - the most amazing fact is you were shooting 1.8 at 1/8000 already, which typically you wouldn’t shoot in direct light 🫢

1/8000. Holy smokes. I don’t know if my aging D610 is capable of shooting that fast. How I envy these guys and their equipment.

Lots of photographers take pictures in bursts of dozens of photos that span 3-4 seconds. The idea that these photos exist is very probable

Doug is amazing. Great mentor on the ground for those new to covering the president. He helped me out in my first presidential assignment to get my bearings.

Moments like this are what made me want to go into photo journalism. This is just simply a rare millisecond of a moment in time, freeze framed forever.

Why he put a high shutter speed like 1/8000 for this kind of venue? That is really doubtful. It says he knew something will happen

I don’t think people understand just how amazing this is at an f1.6! That’s a very small line of focus at a very high shutter speed (only way to catch that bullet streak).

if it grazed him, why wouldn't it be in the shot right after? It would still be traveling, right? serious question.

That streak behind him is too low for hitting the top of his right ear. Just look at it in comparison to his left ear.
