For the uninitiated- Hades knew he gave Orpheus an impossible task. If you love someone to the point of going through the underworld to bring them back, there’s no way you wouldn’t look back to them.

My favorite love story. An Orpheus who doesn’t turn around to see his love wouldn’t go to the underworld to save her in the first place. To be seen is to be loved, and oh Eurydice was.

In the version that I read Orpheus had reached the point where he had gotten out of the underworld and thought she was right behind him so he turned to celebrate with her but she was still in.

I like to think that the reason he looked back was out of selfishness he wanted to bring her back because he couldn't stand living without her so he needed her for himself to be happy again.
