a couple of places I drank at in Japan they would put the cup in a square box slightly shorter than the sake cup and would overfill the cup and have residual sake in the box, can you explain this?

My dad went on a business trip to Japan many years ago and told me they didn’t know that if you didn’t want a refill, just don’t drink the sake they pour. Said he had the worst hangover ever lol
