Spit up – often shrugged off as 'normal,' but is it? Well it certainly can be! Babies have an immature esophageal sphincter which can cause babies to spit up often what looks like more milk than it is. Usually, by the time a baby is 1, this problem subsides because the esophageal sphincter straightens out, keeping the food in their tummies where it should be. But there are cases where baby may be spitting up too frequently and baby isn't gaining weight. If this sounds like your little one it is so important to reach out to your healthcare provider to get baby back on track with weight gain. If your baby is gaining weight that doesn't mean your concerns need to be shrugged off. If your little one is really fussy and having a hard time I encourage you to listen to your mama instincts. Constant nursing, short feeds, fussiness – they all could be indicators of ineffective milk transfer secondary to a shallow latch or oral restriction. Shallow latch, long feeds, persistent fussiness – signs of a potential oversupply. The good news? It's all fixable. Your little one may need a thorough feeding assessment to help minimize the spitting up, gas and fussiness, and I can help you with that. If you are feeling burnt out and need some support and assistance reach out and I can find someone from our who can do a thorough feeding assessment.
