@floriangadsby: Here it is! The finished bowl, made with 50% coarse red stoneware and 50% high iron stoneware, with a dash of bronze filings for good measure, which normally fire to metallic red blots that cover the surface. Apologies for the delay… I don’t think I’ve ever posted a video that garnered so many requests to see the reduction fired vessel. So, in this video, I’m picking up where I left off, beginning with the bisque firing to 1000ºC. This first step hardens the clay whilst also making it porous, this way, when dipped into the glaze, the body of bowl draws in the water that all the raw materials are suspended in, and those materials, of a larger particle size, end up adhering to the body of the vessel, hence why the base is waxed, as I don’t want any glaze there. The bowl is then tidied up and reduction fired over nine hours to about 1290ºC, or cone ten flat, and a few days later the test can be unpacked. I expected brighter results, but I suppose there’s so much iron and other metals in the clay, that ultimately, they end up saturating it and creating a much darker glassy layer. In some ways I don’t mind it. It’s certainly moodier than I imagined, it’s mirror-like from some angles and smooth to the touch, yet, where the clay breaks through its rough, not overly so, but still a definite contrast to the veneer or glass that shrouds it. What do you think? Should I try it again or leave this as a one-off test? #pottery #ceramics #clay #handmade #oddlysatisfying

Makes sense that you may not repeat it, but I think that result is pretty awesome.

I sure hope you repeat, that’s gorgeous. Green and red often makes black or browns, I wonder if you have a blue glaze and it will go purple
